i21 At Dana

Our school is one of 10 schools in SDUSD that participated in the Learning On The Go (LOGO) project. Our 6th grade students were issued a laptop to take home. The FCC covered the cost of the data plan. It was a very exciting project. Check out this video. Dana Middle was one of a few schools featured.

Yummy Burgers And Potential Chaos

Its been awhile since I've posted something weird but I figure this should make up for it. Ever wonder why your McDonald's burger never looks as good as the photo you see in an advertisement? Turns out the "photo-shoot" burger uses the same materials found in the one you can order....the key is the construction. Photo-shoot burgers are built to showcase the various items found in the burger. Real burgers are constructed to stay warm and be eaten.

....and in case you needed it....here is someone doing something stupid.... They drop a few "f-bombs" so if you don't want to hear that then turn the volume off. Wait until the end to see what happens. The description says they were returning from fishing when they climbed under a parked train that started to roll.

Same thing happened to me while walking back from surfing torrey pines one day. I was under a car when I heard the train start up. I never actually heard the engine...just a "clank, clank, clank" coming down the line as the front of the train started to pull the slack out of the couplings between the cars. The sound was the couplings engaging one at a time all the way down the line. I was out of there FAST!

Amy Gets Hooded

Non-regular Algebras Of Dimension 3

Michelle and I attended my sister's commencement at UCSD today. Amy earned her undergrad in Woman's Studies in the 90's and worked at a law firm in New York for awhile.

One day she decided she wanted to earn a PhD in math so she went back to school....and a few years later here we are. Her specialty is Non-regular Algebras Of Dimension 3. I asked her to explain it one time and it basically involves math with numbers that don't really exist. Want to know more? You will have to ask her yourself ;)

The commencement speaker was Bobby Bowman, the producer of the Family Guy series. He was a very funny speaker who's comments were entertaining and a little racy. Michelle thought he was hilarious though a few others may have been slightly annoyed. We loved it! Congrats Amy...we are proud of you!

Capper

We came up with a new dart game that involves throwing a dart through a bottle cap. Basically you have to chuck it like a javelin. We will see how long this game lasts. For now we will call it the capper.

Wrapping Up The Year

...the school year that is. A lot has been going on since the Bravissimos post in May. Since then our school held "thank an administrator" day. One of our art classes hung the collage below on the door of my office.

I've worn a tie to work every day since 1996 so it was only appropriate that the theme of the collage was "Tie It Up". I loved it!

We have been busy on the home front. The hangout in my friend Henry's garage across the street (also known as the Speed Shop" received a serious upgrade in the form of a real-deal pop corn machine. All we had to do was cut a hole in the wall and construct a shelf out of the scrap wood. We took the popper for for a couple of test runs and it works great! Notice the turn table below the record shelf....only vinyl is allowed in the garage!

Steve Correia from the "Correia Middle" days stopped by Dana Middle to say hi. I set him up with a copy of a CD containing the original artwork and letterhead for Correia Middle. I've held onto the CD since 1999. Steve gave Diane and I a nice piece of crystal with the word "Dana" engraved on it. Very cool! Thanks!

By the way...I don't actually have a photo of the crystal that Steve gave to us. The photo above is of a different piece of crystal currently sitting on the desk in my office. I received this piece as a gift in 2001 while working at Correia. Notice the cougar engraved in the bottom.

I figured I would throw in a photo of a sleeping cat while I was at it. I have dozens of photos of Jack sleeping on his back with his mouth open. They are pretty easy to take since Jack sleeps this way almost every night....always worth a photo!
